There are drugs that can restrict the effect of medication for high blood pressure, reducing its effectiveness. A study evaluated a group of hypertensive patients and found out that 18% of them were taking drugs that made the hypertension treatment less effective. Among these are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen, or hormones. In some cases, the use of these medications is justified, and hypertension resulting from its use is acceptable to the patients. However, in most cases, it is better to evaluate alternative treatments for high blood pressure or reconsider the use of the interfering treatment. In many cases, patients are not aware of the negative effect nor understand the risks. They should inform their doctors about every other medication they are taking in order to evaluate potential problems.
